People always ask me where I get my energy from. Especially after long weeks of travel. One week in particular I was up at 4:30am on a Tuesday to fly to Vegas and then drive 2.5 hours to southern Utah for two days worth of events. After my last event wrapped up in Utah I drove back to Vegas to catch a red eye flight to Rochester NY. My flight was delayed which meant I got to my 12:30pm event at 12:25pm, changed my clothes in the restroom and did my event. From there I drove to Buffalo for a 2-day HEART training. The training wrapped up at 4pm and I flew immediately to Richmond VA. Coach Josh Merkel picked me up at the airport at midnight and we were both in bed by 1am only to be up the next day at 6am to serve his team from 8am-11pm. At the end of this day of training I discovered my answer to the question, ‘Where do you get your energy from?’:
When I started this last training of the week my throat was in pain, my body was aching and my mind wasn’t firing on all cylinders. I noticed this. Reset myself. Changed my state. And repeated the phrase, “Get the job done. Get the job done. Get the job done.” These student-athletes did not want to be there at 8am on their day off. They were not excited about having ‘to sit through a 15 hour seminar.’ Their words not mine. And I was brought in to get the job done.
When we work with teams there comes a time in the training where we as facilitators are no longer needed. I step out and let the team hold the standard we have set. I let the team support and challenge each other to get where they need to go as individuals and as a unit. Around 7pm I stepped out during a speech process. On the other side of the wall I couldn’t make out what was being said. But I could hear and feel the energy, passion, love and brotherhood through the walls. When I heard and felt this, I couldn’t help but smile, laugh and feel the emotion myself. I thought, “These young men did not want to be here almost 12 hours earlier. And now they are leading the show! This ‘seminar’ is in their hands.”
This is where I get my energy from. I get my energy from the knowing that so many of us have that same energy inside of us, we just haven’t tapped it yet. Like an oil well right below our feet. I get my energy from the knowing that when so many people find out the well is there, they may start digging. But like anything that’s hard, at the first sign of challenge our small voice speaks up to say ‘HEY! Why are you digging so hard? You’re safe, comfortable and content right now. You’re good ’nuff. We don’t need that oil. We don’t need that fuel. Besides, who knows what could happen when we let it out?’ I know what could happen. What could happen is you could finally discover who you truly are. You could finally find your true voice. You could for once and for all decide that you deserve more than what you have been settling for. What could happen is you could have this same energy that I have for life. And my goal is not for you to live life as I do. That is never my goal. But since you asked where my energy comes from, this is where it is found. If you want this energy, start digging.
I get my energy from the knowing that so many of us have that same energy inside of us, we just haven’t tapped it yet.
If your next question is, “How do I start digging?!” My answer is simple. Starting with daily journaling. In this daily journal make note of moments in your day that make you come alive! And make note of moments in your day that suck the life out of you. After a week or two weeks or a month of noting these moments, reflect on these two lists. How can you create a life with more moments that make you come alive and less moments that suck the life out of you?
The book ‘How Full is Your Bucket’ says we all have an energy bucket. When our energy bucket is full we have the ability to take on life with more energy! When our energy bucket is drained we do not. Simple as that. Are you filling your energy bucket enough to take on the drains that life will throw at you? Are you surrounded by people that fill your energy bucket? Are you getting enough sleep? Eating effectively? Exercising? Doing things that you enjoy that lift your spirits? These are what the book calls ‘fillers.’ There are going to be responsibilities in life that drain from your energy bucket. These ‘drains’ are part of life! It is up to you to ensure you have more ‘fillers’ in your life than ‘drains.’ When you have 3 fillers for every 1 drain you are most likely at a status quo level of energy. You are OK. Good enough. When you have 5-8 fillers for every 1 drain you are thriving! If you want to be thriving, fill your energy bucket! And eliminate those drains. Eliminate the habits, routines and sometimes people in your life that drain from your energy bucket. You energy depends on it!
- Commit to daily journaling where you make note of moments that make you come alive and moments that suck the life out of you.
- Use this journaling to make a list of ‘fillers’ and ‘drains’ in your life.
- Design your day to be filled with more ‘fillers’ than ‘drains’ so that you can have the energy needed to go after the life you desire!
