We change the color of our hair, buy a new car, go on a new vacation, buy new clothes/shoes but if we are honest we’re just bored. We don’t really need any of it.
We are just trying to do something to create that spark, excitement. Something to fill the void. We aren’t living with purpose.
Passion and purpose beats apathy.
We used to dream big dreams in our lives. Growing up our parents said we could do anything but we don’t believe it anymore. Did we ever believe it past the 9th grade? Why are we stuck in a Rut then?
Why isn’t there anything meaningful for me to be genuinely excited about all the time? Why do I hate getting out of bed most mornings? And why does my job suck so much? Why am I only living for the weekend to only lay in bed on Sunday night not wanting to go to work in the morning? This is what being an adult is?
Anyone ever sit back and say “What the heck am I actually doing?” Where am I going? What is this all going to mean in the end?
These thoughts lead me to this conclusion:
You weren’t meant to live a life of stagnation and boredom. We weren’t made to just exist and to just get by. We weren’t made to distract ourselves with things like clothes, vacations, cars, money etc.. it’s all stuff TV and propaganda sells to us as happiness but they’re all just distractions and mean nothing in the end. I mean who cares what car you drove 20 years later? I don’t. Who cares how much money you made last year? Cool story bro. Who cares how much you lift? If it doesn’t impact me I don’t care. I’m just being honest.
Where is the real purpose? Purpose that matters. Purpose that is lasting. Something that is bigger than I am and doesn’t include trying to sell it to all my friends with no hidden agenda.
So what is the answer?
You have to hear me out on this if you want the answer. Seriously, hear me out. What else have you got to lose besides the hair dye you were going to buy?
Jesus is the real purpose. The truth and the life. Cliché right? A purpose that matters and a kingdom that never dies. No hidden agenda. No, he doesn’t want your money. No, he isn’t boring. No, he doesn’t care about rule following. He is for you, not against you and he certainly doesn’t care about your past. Want to never be bored? Follow Jesus. Want to do something that matters? Follow Jesus. Want to be a part of something that not only lasts but goes on forever? Join a church you’re excited about and build his kingdom. Live with purpose, don’t distract yourself with busyness and new things.
I have yet to come close to anything that brings me more freedom, more purpose, more joy, more steps to take and more love in my life than following Jesus. I’ve also never been more scared in my life at times. I’ve never taken so many risks. I’ve never so boldly stepped out of my comfort zone. I don’t have time to be bored. Have you read the bible? The disciples were casting out demons, raising people from the dead, getting thrown in Jail for preaching. That’s boring? I don’t think they were too worried about their hair color. They were too busy changing other people’s hair color if you know what I mean. Now I’m not saying we should go throw ourselves in Jail. But let’s be desperate for change, real change. Change that lasts. Let’s be on mission. Jesus is the answer.
I know it’s not “sexy” and might not be the “cool thing to do” and it’s not what the Kardashians are doing. But it’s real and it matters.
When we follow Jesus we aren’t worried about our hair color (I know I’m beating the hair color thing to death), what car we drive, or about being judged because our identity isn’t in what others think.
Aren’t you sick of trying to impress people you don’t even know or even care about? I was. I became sick of chasing money and I made a lot of it. Still do actually. I’m not ashamed either. God wants me to prosper. But now money isn’t the goal, and isn’t the determining factor of success or purpose in my life.
I became sick of chasing endless temporary pleasures like women, job titles, nicer cars and a facade that no one really bought anyways. People can see right through us and it scares the crap out of us when we realize it.
Here’s the thing. I am flawed, I am imperfect, I’m not the best, I don’t have everything together, I don’t have all the answers and I live in freedom anyways. Because it doesn’t depend on me. It doesn’t matter how good I am at “rule following” if there is such a thing. I am loved no matter what I’ve done and so are you. Your worth isn’t determined by your income, vehicle, vacation time, or relationship status.
Are you sick of always running on that hamster wheel to nowhere? I was a long time ago. We’re bored as Americans. And we are just here to fill time and make it as exciting as possible until something better comes along or until our clock runs out. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to just run the clock out.
But it doesn’t have to be like that. We can have purpose in our life. We can face our heart head on and not ignore what it’s telling us. If we just slow down for once, get off our phones and put down the headphones. We can hear what our heart is trying to tell us. That something is wrong.
We can’t heal ourselves. We can distract ourselves but we can’t heal ourselves. Only Jesus can. That’s a whole other blog post but I just want you to sit on this.
We’re bored. Nothing in this world like money, vacations, cars, or relationships are going to heal it. I’ve tried it. You can too and keep on if you want but in those quiet moments you’ll always wonder if there is more. Temporary pleasures don’t equal permanent happiness as much as they are just a momentary distraction from our boredom. Don’t take the bait anymore.
Jesus heals, He saves and He makes you whole. He gives you purpose. When we build His kingdom He builds our lives. He’s an investment that goes on forever. And He’s alive today. He hears your concerns. He wants to give you freedom. He doesn’t need your resources, he wants your heart. He doesn’t want to give you a set of rules to follow, He just wants you to follow him. And that my friend, is not boring.
